The GropeStone way

GropeStone Capital misManagement is about image and illusion and and words and numbers and money and the mind. Of special interest are the use and abuse of words, numbers, pictures, technology, laws, religion, and other constructs of the human mind, often in the context of cross-cultural understandings and misunderstandings.

The GropeStone name

The name GropeStone comes from the Chinese phrase 摸着石头过河 meaning “to cross a river groping for stones.” We here at Gropestone, though passably fluent in Chinese, admit a weak grasp of the nuances of that phrase, associated with the late 20th century launching of China’s great reforms. But we like its hint of journey and exploration and ancient wisdom from the East, always helpful for lending authority to otherwise dodgy assertions.

The GropeStone staff

GropeStone’s principal took his first breaths in this life during a snow storm 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) above sea level in the Rocky Mountains, a few steps from a tributary of one of the longest rivers on earth. Now he lives within sight of the ocean. He once worked in Asia for a major American bank. Now, after earning his CFA designation, he spends his days in a small 50-year-old money management company, surrounded by smart colleagues.
